Practical, non-hype ways households and drivers can reduce fuel consumption while prices remain volatile.
Government relief can change with policy and budgets, but basic fuel-efficiency habits are available immediately. The biggest gains usually come from reducing unnecessary distance, keeping the vehicle in good condition and avoiding driving patterns that waste energy.
Combine short trips
A cold engine is less efficient during the first part of a journey. Combining several nearby errands into one route can reduce repeated warm-up periods and total distance.
Maintain correct tyre pressure
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance. Use the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, measured when appropriate for the tyre and driving conditions. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall as a substitute for the vehicle specification.
Avoid unnecessary idling
Long idling periods burn fuel without moving the vehicle. Where it is safe and practical, reduce avoidable waiting time with the engine running.
Drive smoothly
Repeated hard acceleration followed by braking wastes energy. Looking farther ahead, maintaining a steady speed and leaving enough following distance can reduce unnecessary acceleration.
Remove unused weight
Permanent heavy cargo and roof accessories can raise fuel use. Remove items you do not need for normal travel, while keeping required safety equipment.
Track litres, not only rupees
When prices move frequently, a rupee-only comparison can be misleading. Record litres purchased and distance driven. Kilometres per litre gives a clearer view of whether the vehicle itself is becoming more or less efficient.
